8 Reasons your Project Needs a Project Manager

Daisy Roberts

A project is a short-term undertaking to create a product or provide a service that is not part of an organization’s typical day-to-day operations. Small projects may not need a complex methodology when it comes to managing a project, but all projects benefit from a designated project manager. When projects are managed properly, budgets and deadlines are met. A project manager increases the likelihood your project will be successful.

In today’s environment, with cost being a paramount concern, Operations often tries to take on projects in addition to our normal workload, or to creatively share resources across teams. It is difficult to both manage your daily operations and take on new technology or process implementations and ultimately ensure that both are done well. Years of experience with managing projects has proven the critical value of a dedicated Project Manager (PM) who knows how to manage a project.

Benefit of a Dedicated Project Manager

Engaging a dedicated PM can bring:

  1. Ability to understand your current state, and your other departmental projects – for proper project prioritization, synchronization, and execution.
  2. Dedication of time and focus – allowing you to keep on with “business as usual,” while maintaining oversight to push the project forward.
  3. Assist in performing change management from within – providing a unique understanding of operational readiness and stabilization requirements.
  4. Ensure proper workflow assessments during standard/typical IT system reviews, or end-user observations and interviews.
  5. Skilled testing experience – providing true testing scenarios, and test-of-change parameters, beyond any system test scripts.
  6. Knowledgeable training and go-live support from within – ensuring marriage of end user understanding and system capability.
  7. Experience in monitoring and evaluation of meaningful metrics and any post-live optimization opportunities.
  8. Completing project on-time and on budget.

You have likely taken on pieces of project management fundamentals (the design & planning, managing system builds & testing, and monitoring timelines & budget); however, did you have enough time and capacity to define and deliver what really counts; meaningful workflows, metrics, and results? A dedicated and focused PM offers a unique opportunity to take fundamental project management further; to coach internal teams, define proper metrics and outcomes, and lead performance improvement from a base of true experience.
